Category talk:Show Posters

From This Might Be A Wiki

Okay I'm done for now. But if anyone feels like uploading some more, there are lot more great quality TMBG show posters here Wout 21:30, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

PROBLEM

so i think we need to figure out exactly what constitutes a "poster" here. i think flyers can count as posters, but i do not think that snippets from magazines and newspapers that advertise shows qualify, and those should go under "Category:Advertisements" or perhaps some new category or subcat, but for now ads should be fine.

the other issue is whether or not ads from newspapers should get "Poster" in the file name so that they are automatically included on show pages. should we even have these ads in the first place? i don't think the google books archive is going anywhere, and normally we just link to these things. should we delete? listings

similar to what was said above, i think we very much need to distinguish between show posters and show listings or advertisements. there are some good rules of thumb: things that list multiple artists tend to be listings; things that have images tend to be posters. the only reason i haven't just gone ahead and implemented this already is that there's a definite gray area in between the two categories. this, for example, is a listing of multiple artists at a single venue but was printed in poster format, rather than appearing in a periodical. i'm open to suggestions for hard rules on categorisation, but i'm guessing this will end up being a judgement call on a case-by-case basis. --ant 21:07, 30 August 2022 (EDT)

I think the example you linked (and any others like it) can simply have both categories applied. Are we just talking about a separate category, or including a 4th option in the Show Page template and upload instructions? -CapitalQtalk ♪ 15:31, 31 August 2022 (EDT)
Maybe we add some of those images to the advertisements category. Could be a good way to get the best of both worlds. A CBGB listing is already in there. - Mrsomebodyelse (talk) 18:46, 31 August 2022 (EDT)
yeah, i was thinking a 4th option. wouldn't be hard to implement. i think advertisements ought to be kept for promotional material for things that aren't concerts. --ant 17:29, 19 September 2022 (EDT)
I agree with ant on this one. TitanicFog (talk) 11:04, 20 September 2022 (EDT)

alright, i've added a listing option to the show page template, moved everything that consider to be a listing to the correct filename, and switched templates on those files — there might be a couple that have fallen through the cracks. in the coming days i'll add documentation to the upload form about what constitutes a listing vs. a poster. --ant 23:36, 22 September 2022 (EDT)

I was wondering, can anything in publications count as a listing? I was thinking that was the case but stuff like this is kind of a grey area to me. - Mrsomebodyelse (talk) 16:57, 14 November 2022 (EST)
