Talk:Live In Berlin
From This Might Be A Wiki
IFC?[edit]
As this is an exclusive Instant Fan Club offering, shouldn't the usual rules apply as far as it having a page on the wiki goes? (i.e. it shouldn't have one) Or did I miss something? BlueCanary (talk) 19:25, 7 November 2014 (EST)
- they pretty clearly announced it in a public way, like At Large, so imo it's fair game. Apollo (colloquia!) 19:26, 7 November 2014 (EST)
- (speaking of At Large, i wouldn't be surprised if they sold the extra stock off at shows or something, either) Apollo (colloquia!) 19:27, 7 November 2014 (EST)
- They did, you are correct, but I thought it was that distinction of being publicly available that made it fair game. But what do I know? BlueCanary (talk) 19:58, 7 November 2014 (EST)
- sorry, not sure what you mean about the distinction of public availability? Apollo (colloquia!) 20:53, 7 November 2014 (EST)
- Available to people who are not members of the IFC. I thought the idea was that recordings that were exclusive to the IFC weren't listed. You have a point with At Large since its page was created when it was still an exclusive as well. Guess I don't understand why that happened either. I can totally see it getting added once it was available at the merch stand, but why do live recordings follow different guidelines than studio recordings if they are only available via IFC? What's the difference between this or the Flood vinyl, or the DAS album which were also publicly announced? Not trying to pick a fight, I'm genuinely trying to understand the distinction. - the main differences, i think, are, that for Flood we don't usually add new release details until there's more information available (label, date, catalog, etc.) but it wouldn't particularly hurt to put it in Flood/Release Details now. and, i do not think that the Dial-A-Song compilation is an exclusive (not sure about Flood either; i don't think there will be 1,500 super-presidents and i can't imagine they'll just destroy the 700-odd copies left over). but even if it were, we have much less information about it; no title, no vague track listing or potential tracks (here i think it's safe to consider the Berlin setlist as "potential tracks"), etc. so the reason the page hasn't been created is the same reason we don't have pages for the other upcoming albums.
- my main reasoning for making this page was that the explicit fact that this release exists and what its contents will be was made available to the general public. not just the IFC, but anyone with Internet access can go to tmbgifc.com and see that this exists. so if TMBG is ok with the general public having that information, it is okay for us to document it here.
- although i think this is more of a personal stance, i think live stuff can get some "special treatment" due to its inexclusive nature in general. unlike other IFC releases that may or may not exist, there isn't anything exclusively released through live albums. people were at these shows (and probably made their own recordings!) and we have the fact that they played certain songs documented already. it just seems to me like, how could there be any harm in letting people know that TMBG collected live recordings of x and y and put them in z order? unlike revealing the contents of other IFC material, this is hardly cluing the plebes into information they don't already have access to (e.g., that TMBG has played the song "How Can I Sing Like A Girl?" live and that a recording exists). i hope that makes sense out in words like that. obviously this is my own interpretation so it's not like it isn't up for debate, but that's what i think about all of it! since there's no hard rule established and we're just working off precedent, there's not really a right answer.
