This performance was part of the Spring 1999 Walk In Lay Down (WILD), Washington University's annual student-run concert. Admission was open to students only. The band's performance was interrupted by a power outage, which led to a 45-minute break mid-set.
Review from Washington University's 1999 Hatchet yearbook:
- Thousands of Wash U. students gathered at Spring Wild to partake of the music, dancing, food, games, and drinking. The afternoon began with dedicated partygoers dragging their couches, kegs, and lawn chairs into the quad as the clouds hung low and threatened rain. Local St. Louis restaurants set up tables under Ridgely's arcade and served various finger foods and desserts to the students. A steady drizzle began, but students continued to pour into the quad. Wash U.'s own swing band, Big Red and the Snappy Dressers, blew the clouds away with their horn section, and The Coup, an Oakland band, riled the crowd with their West Coast brand of hip hop.
- As the evening sky grew darker, students crowded towards the main stage to hear the main act at WILD, They Might Be Giants. TMBG played a quirky mix of their best hits, until a short circuit caused a 45-minute delay in the middle of the show. To the students' delight, TMBG came back on stage and improvised the show's best performance, "Who Fucked Up the Show?" Although TMBG wanted to play all night, the show, unfortunately, came to an end.

- First notable thing was them commenting on the big cement orchestra pit that separated us from them. They said not to pass the dude into the pit, because it is real. Eventually a lot of the security guards had to go into the pit to catch any potential dudes. Fortunately no one fell. So everything is all fine and good, they played pretty much the same stuff at the Decautor show (that I missed), then about 30-40 minutes into it, the power goes out. (I later found out that the rain from before had caused a short circuit on some exposed wires or something)
- After about 40 minutes of restless fans doing random chants and songs and stuff, the power goes on. Mr. Flansburgh started some improv song about the blame game, and something like "who is the fucker we can blame it on". I guess they kept informing him that due to city ordinances they must end the show by 11:00. Mr. Flansburgh kept saying to fuck that and stuff. Finally at 11:00 he started another improv thing saying "we're not fucking leaving" (much like the "everybody conga, i'm not fucking kidding") Then someone came up on stage, and he assured them that they were done...after the next two songs. Everyone was chanting "bullshit" and Mr. Linnell said something like, "yes, our next song is called 'bullshit' off our new album "bullshit" so then they played a song (forgot which) and ended with a pretty good version of New York City.
- Overall (minus the power outage) it was pretty good, they played i think all of the educational songs (even mammal) my biggest disappointments were no conga line, and they didn't play Spy (I love the conducting ending) oh well. I didn't get a set list or get to meet the band. The people in charge of the show were under _strict_ orders not to let people mob Them. which I can totally understand. Nothing worse than a group of 300 drunken college students slobbering all over the band.
