Anecdote from James Duval on the Miscellaneous T Facebook group.[1]

That show at the Boathouse was my first concert. I’ve told this story a million times and have probably even told it here. This was in 1992, so I was all of 12 years old. I had homework to finish before I could go to the concert, so my mom called the venue to see when TMBG would go onstage. The phone rang and rang and rang. The conversation that followed was relayed to me secondhand, but I can still remember it as if it happened to me.
“Uh…Boathouse.”
“Hi, my son and I are coming to the show tonight and I was wondering when They Might Be Giants are going on.”
“Well, the opener goes on at 8 and we go on around 9:15.”
“Wait… ‘we’?”
“Yeah, this is John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants.”
Apparently, he and Linnell had just finished soundcheck. He was just making his way backstage when he heard the phone ringing and decided to pick it up. My mom proceeded to tell Flans how I was their biggest fan, owned all their music (not entirely true as I would later discover), and so on. He offered to put us on the guest list, but Mom told him we already had tickets.
“Well, stop by the merch table. I’ll set something aside for him.”
When we got to the show, we made a beeline to merch and there waiting for me was a personalized and signed Hayseed shirt that I still have sitting in storage somewhere.
And that was the moment I knew I’d found the band I’d follow forever.
