"'Giants': Then Again, They Might Not" by Mark Jenkins
The Washington Post, Mar. 8, 1988:
They Might Be Giants, the New York duo that sold out the 9:30 club Friday night, operates a dial-a-song service. That service's regular rotation demands prolificacy, a challenge the Giants have sort of met. That is, they clearly write lots of songs, but most of them are one joke throwaways with wobbly tunes.Only a handful of the songs on the Giants' 19-song debut album are worth repeated listenings, and they played only a few of those Friday night. Fortunately, the Giants' offhand charm carried most of the lesser compositions, and when performing some of the stronger ones − "Don't Let's Start," for example, or the self-mocking "Number Three" − the twosome was quite winning. Opening was Das Fürlines, an all-woman polka-punk quintet. They call this sort of thing "high concept," and like many of the products that bear that tag, the Fürlines didn't seem to have given much thought to following through on their initial brainstorm.
