A review of They Might Be Giants' set by George Kanzler
The Star-Ledger, Oct. 19, 1987:
First of all, they aren't even a band, they're a duo, but unlike most rock duos, they don't appear with backup band, they simply use pre-recorded tapes to supply most of their rhythmic backing. This is the duo that runs a Dial-A-Song number (718-387-6962) offering a new song everyday (or almost everyday). And comes out on stage wearing three-foot-high turbans, and uses accordion and baritone sax as two of its live instruments on stage. Their songs are often as off-the-wall as their instruments and appearance."Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head" includes a break for guitar where, instead of an actual guitar solo, John Linnell [sic] sings out the repeated "Awesome guitar solo!" Another song, about the sun, sounds like an encyclopedia entry set to a Celtic rock tune borrowed from U2. Song subjects range from the bizarre to the mundane: "A Shoehorn with Teeth," "The Famous Polka," "I Will Date the Girl from Venus for Science" and "(She Was A) Hotel Detective." Musical styles are borrowed or appropriated from everywhere, and Linnell's guitar solos, when he does play them, threaten to deconstruct right before your ears. They Might Be Giants may well be the most subversive rock band to come along since The Fugs.
