Interpretations:To A Forest

From This Might Be A Wiki

Kind of goofy[edit]

This almost certainly isn't intentional, but it always reminds me of the plot of the video game Night In The Woods.

Mental Ilness[edit]

The narrator thinks that someone is looking for him and dragging him to a forest (so cliche) and leaving him there. Sounds like paranoia to me. I really didn't get most of this song, so correct me however you want. Saskia16 (talk) 16:27, 10 January 2017 (EST)Saskia16

Dreaming[edit]

To me, this song is about lucid dreaming, or perhaps just dream analysis, or the intense effects of anti-depressants on one's dreams (a common side-effect with many of these drugs).

This stuff is complex, never figured out the part that comes next. I'm out of my depth, everything I reach for is out of my grasp.

Lucid dreaming, the awareness of your dream-state while you are dreaming. A common theme is incomplete understanding of what's going on, plus the "never quite getting there" feeling is also commonly reported.

And nothing comes next. You figured on a change or a rest. Well, that's a good guess. Everything is shifting and shifting again.

Unpredictability, your dream-scape shifting without your control.

Something punched my mind in the face. Tracked me down under my pillow case. Now we're alone in this freaky place, our consciousness has been...

The last word of this chorus would be (based on context and the rhyme scheme) "erased," which the author cleverly omitted. But this is where the best evidence of my interpretation comes from. Something punching one's mind in the face and the mention of a pillowcase makes me think of a drug or event eliciting powerful dreams. Dreams can be freaky and replace one's normal (woken) consciousness.

This stuff is complex, never figured out the part that comes next. I’m out of my depth, everything I reach for is out of my grasp.

There are forces out to destroy us. I heard whispers, it was a warning. They'll knock us out and drag us to a forest. Yes, that's what I've been told.

I can't attribute much meaning to this verse, but it seems like the dreams are turning into nightmares (or maybe they were always nightmares and are just intensifying?).
