There's No Business Like Lazy Business[edit]

Lyrics were written by Irving Berlin, but it's not hard to see why the Johns gravitated towards this song. It fits into their anti-work ethos rather well, with the quote from Flansburgh being particularly revealing. It's well-documented that the Johns love books and this idyllic scene of reading books on a Summer's day is heavenly. I think the Johns are also intelligent enough to understand that as a 20's cover this was written when labor was losing ground - unions were seen as the product of radical communist agitators (sound familiar?) and nationwide strikes were permeating America. After WWI inflation hit the economy and people were growing sick of rations (not to mention literally sick due to the Great Influenza epidemic). Harding was elected and promised a "return to normalcy" which meant a series of pro-business anti-labor laws that resulted in a steep decline in union membership and horrible times for the labor movement. I know this is turning into a history lesson but I think context really helps me appreciate this song more - that little jab at Rockefeller ends up being rather humorous.

This song isn't celebrating laziness, it's celebrating leisure. For most of us there's something we'd rather be doing than working and in a soft way this song commemorates that.
