Dead music, like a Phoenix[edit]
A joke about the ridiculous ubiquity of 1970's nuggets reborn on 1980's USA radio. Every city had at least two "classic rock" stations overplaying the same collection of bloated leftover songs from a limited selection of 60's and 70's artists. If you hadn't heard Stairway To Heaven, Layla, or Free Bird in the last forty five minutes you were sure to hear one of them in the next fifteen. The soulless marketing analysts who ran radio nationwide treated the back catalog of rock as if it were fresh fodder needing a rotation schedule to track growing & diminishing listener interest. Even if that music had been your younger self's favorite, you were sure to become sick of hearing it relentlessly after a few months. Through the late 80's and early 90's we were all like the poor boy (or girl) who were forced to sing the same stupid song "again and again and again." Flansburgh's droning intonation of "Freeeee Biiiird" at the end captures the resulting mood: damnation unto ennui. --Nehushtan (talk) 18:46, 6 November 2019 (EST)
