Interpretation 1[edit]
The singer is repeating the phrase "down down down" all the time, As if he tries to encourage himself. He's planning to kill himself and his baby, I think. He is a sailor-man, and going down to the bottom of the sea is for a sailor-man the same as death... down-down-down, he is not really sure if he can pull through with the plan though. -Electricrain 15:27, June 6, 2008
Rock Lobster?[edit]
I wonder if there's a connection with the B-52's Rock Lobster: http://youtu.be/aepSPpU4S2o During the bridge, Fred (Schneider) sings "Down, Down..." in a somewhat similar way. ChaosS (talk) 19:34, 12 September 2013 (EDT)
It's not about suicide[edit]
It's about two people going to the bottom of the ocean, two lovers, the most private of places. the bottom of the ocean.
