Andy Partridge of XTC
A superior effort from one of the biggest talents around, XTC's capable songsmith goes "Hello" with four brand new recordings including 2 great songs from the unreleased "Bubble Gum Album."
Peter Stampfel
Founding member of seminal '60's band The Holy Modal Rounders, Stampfel is joined here by New York avant-garde guitarist Elliott Sharpe. Includes the intriguing ballad of "Laura The Horse."
Chaz and the Motorbikes
They are a new band out of Boston. Chaz Chesterman's old band was Scruffy the Cat. This combo shines on four plaintive pop songs including "Jackhammers."
Spanish Fly
A new kind of power trio from New York's downtown scene. Spanish Fly features tuba powerhouse Marcus Rojas, Lounge Lizard musical director and TMBG survivor Steven Bernstein on trumpet, and slide guitar master Dave Tronzo. Produced by Hal Wilner.
The Minus Five (SCOTT from The YOUNG FRESH FELLOWS with PETER BUCK of REM and TOM & TERRY of NRBQ)
Worlds collided. See '93 for description.
Drink Me
Somnambulate into the quiet life of this New York duo. This special disc, entitled "NYC," is a song-cycle about the late night world they call home.
The Jickets
Hello's one archival disc is a release of rare recordings of a singular band from the Lower East Side scene of the mid-eighties. The Jickets' shared many bills with the then formative They Might Be Giants. More than bohemian, the Jickets are a way of life, a lighthouse for the spiritually adrift. Includes "Jicket Island." Produced by Bill Krauss.
Brian Dewan
Hello's debut artist in '93 returns by popular demand. On this disc Brian steps out in an electronic setting. Includes "Happy-Go-Dumpy Summer."
John Linnell of THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS
More than just anthems, these five selections from his "State Songs" project are views thru Linnell's unique musical kaleidoscope. Selections include "South Carolina," "Oregon," "Pennsylvania," "Maine," and "Nevada."
Portastatic (MAC from SUPERCHUNK)
A big slab of inspired lo-fi from the mind of one of today's most critically acclaimed artists.
'95 Discography[edit]
We have a limited quantity of '93, '94 & '95 sets left. We may not be able to fill all orders by the end of '96.
SPONDEE
These city-folk deliver the hits "Dog With Back Legs Broken" a swinging cover of "My Baby Just Cares for Me" and the caffeine dream of "One To Go." Produced by John Flansburgh.
FREEDY JOHNSTON
Hear Freedy play the drums (!) and perform some great, highly rocking, new songs. Stand out tracks "You Get Me Lost" and "On The Way Out" may even make it to his up-coming major label release.
THE COCTAILS
A major spacewalk for Chicago's original proponents of Space-Age Bachelor Pad music. With vibes and synthesizers in the foreground, this disc is over a half hour of jazz-like composition and odd-ball improvisation.
John Flansburgh's MONO PUFF
The original solo recordings that Flansburgh expanded on to create this years Mono Puff lp. Home recording at its finest, includes an a cappella version of "So Long Mockingbird" and a song originally written for NPRs All Things Considered called "Triptaphane."
CHRIS STAMEY'S ALASKA
The King of Power Pop, and former dB, Chris Stamey returns to form with his new band Alaska. Includes the riveting "Rock Manager."
SANTA SPECIAL
Hello alumni return with traditional and original holiday songs. Neither sentimental nor sneering, this six song ep was a big hit with subscribers, and hopefully will soon be expanded into a commercial release. Includes "Elf's Blues" by Spondee, Brian Dewan performing "Island of Misfit Toys," and Amy Allison's "Toyland."
DAVE SCHRAM
Hoboken's finest rock guitarist has been featured prominently on recordings by Soul Asylum and Yo La Tengo's great Fakebook LP. Here he displays his singer/songwriter talents in an acoustic setting.
MY DAD IS DEAD
An adult portion of nocturnal dread from Mark Edwards. My Dad Is Dead are a venerated part of the Mid-western Indie scene. Not just for the chemically depressed!
PHILCO BENDIX
Four songs from a new power trio from New York. Loud guitars and good lyrics.
AMY ALLISON AND THE MAUDLINS
NYC songwriter and daughter of Jazz legend Mose Allison, Amy Allison's personal vocal stylings and unique take on the country song form made this CD a big hit with Hello subscribers.
Design by Megan Cash & Rolf Conant. Illustrations by Paul Corio. "Hello Bird" by Black Angus.

3/96 MAGNETIC FIELDS – The Gothic Archies
The Gothic Archies is the product of The Magnet Fields' mastermind Stephin Merritt. A self-produced Magnetic Fields tribute album entitled "Wasps" by the 6ths featured vocal turns by Lou Barlow of Sebadoh and Yo La Tengo's Georgia Hubley was a critics' fave last year. Their Hello effort is again presented in the guise of new band, "The Gothic Archies" combine dour lyrics with bubble-gum infused music creating a compelling hybrid that can only be described as Gothliscious.
4/96 WILL RIGBY
Channeler of the paranormal, party starter, and free range super-drummer, Will Rigby unveils a set of outstanding recordings, including the first CD release of the cult classic "Dave," and the service-class anthem "Paper Hat." Will has performed with the dB's and Matthew Sweet, and is currently at work on his new album with his group The Unmentionables.
5/96 J. FLANSBURGH's MONO PUFF full length preview disc
Yes, the May issue of Hello is a special pre-commercial release version of John Flansburgh's MONO PUFF "Unsupervised" full length Ryko CD slated to arrive in record stores this summer. From rave ups like "Devil Went to Newport", and "Guitar Was the Case" to the ballads "Don't Break the Heart" and "Don't I Have the Right?" to electronic experiments like "To Serve Mankind" and "Hello, Hello," this Ip is as strong as it is surprising. Joining Flansy on the album are the Candy Butchers' Mike Viola on lead guitar, bassist Hal Cragin from Iggy Pop's band and Steve Calhoon from Skeleton Key on drums. Includes autographed lyric booklet.
