Fan Recaps and Comments:
This show was on the first night of "Lords of Independence", an annual music festival hosted from 1988 to 1990 at the Biskuithalle venue in Bonn, Germany[1]. They Might Be Giants were the last out of five bands to open for the experimental German music group Einstürzende Neubauten, who were headlining on the first day[2].
John Flansburgh recalled this show as part of a spotlight article written on They Might Be Giants titled "Take It To The River" from an unknown 1990 publication:
"The biggest concert we ever played was in Bonn, West Germany," says Flansburgh. "We were one of [five] bands opening for Einstürzende Neubauten − the other [four] were dressed all in black. [The festival] had somehow scheduled us to go on right before [Neubauten]. We were terrified."
So, They Might Be Giants opened with what it felt was one of its grittier numbers.
"The great thing was that this long-haired audience really got into what I thought were our relatively wimpy songs."
John Linnell would also recall the show in a 2002 interview with Westzeit: "[It] was very strange. I don't know if we were able to attract new listeners there. It was a very mysterious, unusual show because musically we didn't fit into the overall billing at all!"
