They Might Be Giants' major label debut was one of the biggest surprises of the emerging alternative rock scene of 1990. Graduating from their home recording roots to a full studio set up, the band took advantage of the sonic possibilities with a wider palette of instrumentation and a deeper exploration into the potential of home-brewed sampling. The album would generate chart hits in the UK and take John and John across the world touring in support of what would become a platinum-selling album.
In honor of the album that made them an international act, They Might Be Giants is celebrating Flood's 30th anniversary in 2020 by performing the album, in its entirety, on stages in select cities across the US. The show is "an evening with" and TMBG will play two full sets with their electrifying live band featuring the trumpet genius Curt Ramm. The show is an “evening with” with two sets of music. (It also means NO OPENER, so get there early.) The sets will span the band's entire career from early favorites to brand new tracks, as well as the live improvisations that have become a highlight of TMBG shows –– and somewhere in there will be FLOOD. All 19 songs! In sequence, in reverse sequence, alphabetical order, or mixed into additional repertoire? It could be different on any night.
It’s true –– the first Flood shows sold out in mere hours of their posting, and while some bots got their cold dead hands on them, we can assure you most simply went to TMBG fans with advance sales codes, like this one for you! What does that mean? It means people on this mailing list can avoid disappointment and all the uncertainty and cost of reselling sites. We suggest you take advantage of this window of secret availability and prepare for the blessed event with this Spotify link: https://found.ee/floodS.
These are Black Friday releases and sold exclusively through independently owned record stores beginning on November 29. Find your local record store here recordstoreday.com.
ABOUT THE DON’T LET’S START EP
They Might Be Giants’ Don't Let's Start EP, along with the unforgettable accompanying video, launched the band into national prominence back in 1987. Like the multiple pressings over that year, the reissue sports a unique colorway –– this time an eyeball-melting neon green. The disc was remastered by UE Nastasi at Sterling Sound and is pressed on 180g crystal clear vinyl. This hand-numbered, limited edition, Record Store Day Black Friday exclusive release will correspond with the reissue of the Brooklyn alternative rock legends’ eponymous debut album in celebration of that record's 33 1/3 anniversary.
ABOUT JOHN LINNELL’S STATE SONGS
John Linnell’s beloved State Songs project is finally available on vinyl just in time for Record Store Day Black Friday. Originally released in 1999, the 15 tracks are adventurous even by the standards of They Might Be Giants. AllMusic praised that Linnell “Masters every stylistic leap he takes; the tunes are all united by the catchy-as-the-clap melodies. You're guaranteed to be continually amazed by the inventiveness and sheer beauty of his melody lines.” Limited to 2,000 copies worldwide, and pressed on green marbled vinyl, this 20th-anniversary reissue marks State Songs’ first availability on vinyl. Something to hold everyone until another volume comes along!
Of course, They Might Be Giants is active on Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Spotify, and Tumblr, and John F. Posts photos of his cats and other people's guitars on Instagram.
