AN INVITATION FROM WORKER THREE at IDLEWILD RECORDINGS

John and John will wait
While the myspace friends will write
Haiku poetry

We at Idlewild Recordings want to invite you to join the "They Might Be Giants Haiku Challenge" at www.myspace/theymightbegiants. Write your message in the COMMENT section as a haiku, the wonderful traditional Japanese poetry form. The structure is simple: two phrases written over three lines, with the "break" after the first or second line. There are five syllables to the first and third lines, seven in the middle. No rhyming necessary, and they are more interesting to John and John when they aren't about the band. As far as content - culture, politics, human relations... it's all available to you, but please nothing obscene. Thanks!

If you really want to dig in to it, check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku

This must be the place

For your haiku ideas
Finally to shine

We can't wait to see your efforts!-

EARLY HAIKU PRAISE FROM OPERATOR DOT at IDLEWILD RECORDINGS

The first 24 hours of the myspace haiku challenge generated many fine examples. We left it to Operator Dot to pick some of the best.

My top 5 choices, in no particular order...

The windshield reflects
your face, driving me crazy
metro busdriver.

The author's frustration is evident, and instantly relatable.
A universal poem for the people.

Whatever happened
to Ace of Base, they were the
Best ten years ago.

I quite liked everything by this author, though I felt this was her best: simply stated, sentimental, honest.

don't even go there...

you better check yourself girl...
Oh no you didn't!

Warnings are issued, and then in the last line, BAM! The conflict escalates! I wish haiku could contain more lines. I need to know what happened!

the demon ipod
feeds on crushed spirits of men
steve jobs eats babies

There's so much going on here. The author deftly blends his/ her disdain for technology with a healthy comment on the state of today's music industry. I want to blow this up and put it on my wall.

They Might Be Giants
Better than fresh bologna
El Chupacabra

This is my favorite of the many (many many many) band-related haiku. The lack of punctuation is what makes it so spectacular- is the author addressing us as Chupacabra, or is it a warning of some kind?
