It must have been the following year — but before I started at NYU in the fall — when I got Mom to take me to another TMBG show, this one at Maxwell's. They had started to do "Cowtown" by then. Mom, a psychologist, sussed out what the "cow beneath the sea" referred to. I was scandalized when Mom gave her explanation of the song to me; I was 16! TMBG couldn't really be singing about THAT, could they? So Mom said, "Ask them," and I did, and JF told me my mom was right. But I think she was nearby at the time, so he might've said it to be polite.
