Interpretation 1

My interpretation of this song is that it is about vanity. The girl in the song refuses to ride a motor bike because it "doesn't fit her". This argument of their disapproval of vanity is shown more clearly in the free mp3 version. In the free version the lines are changed from:

"She doesn't ride a motor bike
She says it doesn't fit her
But she always wears a monocle
Richard's on Richards"

To:

"She doesn't ride a motor bike
She doesn't think it fits her
But she always wears a helmet
Richard's on Richards"

People who wear helmets all the time are a common joke for mental *******tion. The basic principle of the verse is that people who are so vain are ********. The jokes of the tune are further reinforced by the Monty Python-esque (Snap-snap, grin-grin, wink-wink, say no more bit) "You know what I mean" chorus. Its basically a nudge to see if you understand what they're trying to convey. Other lines that indicate that its about vanity include: "Check out her hair/She's really on an ego trip." This is basically a slap to the face of model types who obsess constantly about petty physical attributes. The lines "She's a different kind of girl/The kind you see in pictures/I think you might have seen her" is reminding us that even though we're different, we're all very much so the same. And the fact that fashion doesn't constitute you being an individual. The message: Fashion trends are indicative of anything but individualism. --Radaradar 01:17, December 18, 2005

Interpretation 2

I think this song has a deep spiritual meaning. Richard's on Richard's I assume is a church and the girl in question I believe represents an angel. She is above us in all ways. That's my interpretation. --GiantMidget 07:36, January 16, 2006

Interpretation 3

This may say more about me than it does about the song, but what if you replace the name "Richard" with its nickname (the one that begins with the letter D). Then she really is a different kind of girl. You know what I mean...

Of course, now the scene in the video where she snips the scissors and then they disappear southward makes me kind of uncomfortable

Interpretation 4

It's actually a parody of Arnold Layne: the English accent, the at-times similar background music, and one more thing: "Different kind of girl", "He's not the same" as well as "Richard's on Richard." & "Aarrnold Layne."
