They Might Be Giants[edit]

"Why is the world in love again? Why are we marching hand in hand?"

And so begins Flood, the latest from Brooklyn's Ambassadors of Love. And we know why, don't we campers? Yes, as you all probably know the two Johns have a new album out and boy, is it making a splash in the pop puddle.

Welcome to the newest members of the They Might Be Giants Information Club, and of course hello again to all you "old timers" out there. In the past few months the P.O. Box at Williamsburg Station has been stuffed with cards & letters & packages from fans and well wishers. A veritable flood o' mail you might say. The TMBG Information Club is just that—an outlet for information. It is not a fan club even though we assume that those who write in are indeed fans. The 2 SASEs that you (most of you anyway) have sent in are used as follows: one for for the info club to send you back updates &/or goodies in (the larger envelope the better—for you) and the other goes along with the letter (if you included one) you write to the Johns. Yes, they do indeed read their fan mail, and if something strikes them as interesting they answer it. So all of you who send only the SASes and nothing else, don't expect a personal reply from the Giants. Only info!

Since Flood came out, They Might Be Giants have completed a triumphant tour of Europe, playing in England (where "Birdhouse in Your Soul" is currently in the Top Five), Ireland, West Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, & Belgium. Next stop, the West Coast...of Canada that is, as the Giants begin their North American tour in Vancouver, B.C. on March 19th, then south through Seattle & Portland, to San Francisco on March 23rd. They reach Los Angeles & San Diego in early April, then a short break in L.A. where TMBG make their debut on NBC's "Tonight Show", and supervising the filming of their next (animated) video (of the next single), "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)". Then it's eastward through the Southwest towards New Orleans, where they arrive April 12th. The Giants' will be backtracking to Phoenix, AZ where they are appearing at radio KUKQ's benefit for Multiple Sclerosis at Compadré Stadium on April 19th. Then it's eastward again as the Giants' bandwagon continues up through the Midwest(and East) during the rest of April and May. The two Johns are heading back to the U.K. for concert dates scheduled June 12-26, and the rest of

We hope the enclosed tour schedule is of some help to inquiring tour-minded people, BUT we can't fully guarantee the dates/places after May 5th, because they are still in negotiation. As Flood continues to skyrocket up the charts, TMBG is receiving bigger & better offers by the hour. Check your local newspapers and magazines around the time when the Giants are listed to play in your area for up to date information.

Note to all college students and anyone else who has a change of address: if you want to continue receiving TMBG info please send your new address to us as soon as it changes. Please remember to include your ID number for faster processing. Some of you are saying, "But I sent a SASE and there's no ID number on it!" So much mail has been sent to TMBG lately that some names haven't been entered on the mailing list as yet. But we know that you want any & all pertinent Giant information sent to ASAP. So don't worry - you'll get an "official" ID number with the next TMBG update sent to you.

Some personal TMBG info:

  • John Linnell has acquired a spanking new Buescher Bass Saxophone.
  • John Flansburgh has replaced his trademark "nerd-rom" glasses with lighter wire frames.
  • For those of you who have asked for the Johns' birthdays, here they are:
    • John Flansburgh: May 6 (Taurus)
    • John Linnell: June 12 (Gemini)
  • People continue to ask, "Whatever happened to the "Purple Toupee" maxi single?" or various reasons, Bar None (the Giants' former label) decided not to release it. They do however plan to release a TMBG "pre-Flood B-side" anthology (with some never-released-in-the-U.S. tunes) sometime later this year.

Well, that wraps up the TMBG update for today. If you have any orders, questions, or requests, or just want to get something off your chest, send it them to the above address, & we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

KEEP THOSE CARDS & LETTERS COMING!
