Trivia/Info
- "Stomp Box" is the only song from John Henry without a demo on the John Henry Demos album, which was recorded months earlier at Excello Studios in Brooklyn before the song was written. According to Flansburgh on Tumblr, the song was a "late arrival" that was "cooked up in situ" during the final album sessions at Bearsville Studios.
- John Linnell in a July, 1996 interview with Music & Computers, when asked about the distorted vocals on this song:
Do you ever listen to Indian film music? For some reason they always do this routine where they distort the vocals. It's particularly obvious now that the backing music is done with a lot of MIDI equipment. It's very clear, but the vocals still get all distorted. I think it's fascinating. There's this woman named Lata Mangeshkar, who's like 80 years old, and she sings on almost every film score. She has a really high, strong voice and it always sounds like she's over driving the microphone. We weren't influenced by that specifically, but we think it's a cool sound. At first the recording engineers flinched when we wanted to do that, but now it's very accepted.
- The lyric "Pour the poison in my ear" may be a nod to Shakespeare's Hamlet.
