They Might Be Giants
— with Run, Westy, Run and Poi Dog Pondering co-headlining; The Yardapes opening —
Grand Emporium in Kansas City, MO
October 31, 1988 at 9:30 PM
Fan Recaps and Comments:[edit]
A Halloween show, which included a costume party with a $100 prize. Tickets were $8 at the door and $7 at CATS outlets or with a college ID.
From the Kansas City Star, Nov. 3, 1988:
During the show, Flansburgh made his plea for getting rid of the vice president in an amended passage of the hopping-good Giants' song "Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head". The capacity crowd's reaction was a sustained yell of approval. However, it's unlikely that any political conversions took place.
Linnell preferred announcing such potential campaign slogans as "Don't fear the bag of skeletons!" while flinging the contents of a clear plastic sack of little bony party favors to audience members.
Preview of the show from the Kansas City Star, Oct. 30, 1988:
OK, here's the game plan. Pick up "Lincoln," the new 18-song They Might Be Giants album. Listen. Rejoice. Dance in place. Kiss someone. Then see the Giants, known in human form as John Linnell and John Flansburgh, Monday at the Grand Emporium, 3832 Main St. You'll find two unlikely pop heroes with an accordion, a big saxophone, an electric guitar and instrumental tapes accompanying their dance songs of serious intent. If you don't have the new album, you can still enjoy the show. It will be a lot like kissing someone. The Yardapes begin at 9:30 p.m. Later, the go-down-easy strains of Hawaii's Poi Dog Pondering escort the heartiest of Halloween souls into early morning. Tickets cost $7 at CATS outlets and $8 at the door; $1 off with college ID. Call 931-3330.
