They Might Be Giants
— with Me First opening —
Cicero's in St. Louis, MO
January 26, 1987
Fan Recaps and Comments:
"ON THE RUN... OR MAYBE JUST AVERAGE HEIGHT" by Steve Pick
Jet Lag Magazine, Mar. 1987:
On the basis of this live performance I would brand They Might Be Giants as a distinctly minor pleasure, but a pleasure nonetheless. Performing chiefly with guitar, accordion and pre-recorded bass and drum parts, this twosome made fun of pop and rock convention, football (apparently the New York Giants were in the Super Bowl the day before the show), Alabama (the state, not the band), and the audience (comprised of a bunch of people in back who seemed to like them and a few people up front who called out a lot of insults). Song lyrics could be taken from musician want ads or could deal with the desire to get old before one's death. One particular hilarious part was when [Flansburgh] chanted the words "Awesome guitar solo" a few times in lieu of actually playing one. Truly, these guys came to have a good time, and a good time we all had.
Recalling the show in an email to TMBW in late 2023, John Linnell said:
The place where the guy flipped us off for the whole gig, and then came backstage to tell us how much he loved our show.
