Interpretations Talk:Shoehorn With Teeth
Listening to this song reminds me of a rock star, (who tours the world with a heavy metal band) who constantly makes unreasonable demands, such as wanting a shoehorn with teeth, even though he knows there isn't one and it would an aggravating task to acquire something like it, because it is his right to demand it. This rock star was once an indolent and demanding child, who made people miserable until he got his way. The part where he asks a girl if they can both sit in a chair, reminds me of celebrities who walk into restaurants and make the staff reseat a patron sitting at a table they want. He doesn't get nervous making this demand because, as far as he's concerned, the girl doesn't exist and her feelings are totally irrelevant. And he's not really asking her to move, he's expecting her to because of his celebrity and sense of self-importance. His behaviour is constantly childish, hence the phrase, "what's the sense in always thinking 'bout the tomb, when you're much too busy returning to the womb?" He refuses to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and always inevitably reverts to childlike behaviours and comforts. He doesn't contemplate his own death because his ego prevents him from this, and gives him a sense of immortality. He thinks his opinions mean more than others, and are always fact, and as the song states, people should get beat up for stating their beliefs, which might mean practically everyone wants to beat him up for being a arrogant so and so. I felt like this was the Johns' reflecting on the behaviour of certain rock stars or celebrities who see themselves as better than their fans and contemporaries.
