I often make interpretations as literal as possible. That doesn't mean that the larger interpretations are useless. In fact, you can learn a lesson from some of them. Some songs are obvious that they are really deep, but I think that most of them are really simple. The Johns can't make every song this huge deep mess. Many have to just be songs. I think that this is one of these instances. It's about a girl cutting her long hair and the narrator thinks that it is terrible. Literal!

The Johns didn't write this. It's a Beach Boys song. The narrator used to date some girl, Caroline, and after their relationship, maybe even years later, he sees her again and she's got a different haircut. And he's all "damn! Your new hair makes me nostalgic for old times, but the old times are gone and there's nothing I can do about it!"
