This Might Be A Wiki talk:Spam Blacklist

From This Might Be A Wiki

Is this a new feature? What does it do, prevent any of this article's text to be added in any edit? -TDK 08:16, 8 Feb 2006 (CST)

We've had it for a while, but I kept the entries in a separate text file. I moved it to the databse so that I had some easier access to it. It doesn't block all text, just text that has links that contain the blacklisted text. Here's more info on this blacklist, if you're interested in using it for your own wiki...It's very easy to implement. meta.--Duke33 08:43, 8 Feb 2006 (CST)
I just tried to implement it, but it seems I was unsucessful. Can you show me the code that was added to the localsettings.php for this site? -TDK 10:36, 8 Feb 2006 (CST)
Anyone else think "Dr Who" and "Dr. Who" need to be added to this? -Q.gif 17:19, 9 Feb 2006 (CST)
Unfortunately, it won't work, unless they put it in a link, i think. --Duke33 18:53, 9 Feb 2006 (CST)

Idea

I noticed that most mass-vandalisms such as the ones which occured today and yesterday are done by people who haven't bothered registering screenames and logging in. Perhaps if there was a limit set in place, such as "only three pages can be edited within ten minutes if you're not signed in," a lot of vandalism could be avoided. And to prevent people from signing up just to bypass this, maybe the limit could also be in place for people during their first week after signing up? I know it would require a bunch of programming, but it would probabaly pay off in the long run. -CapitalQtalk ♪ 20:49, 9 Feb 2006 (CST)

I LOVE this idea.--tehbagel ( o ) 15:10, 19 May 2006 (CDT)
I posted this idea before I was an admin or really knew about a lot of this stuff...but looking back, I don't even think this is possible. Once we upgrade to a newer MediaWiki, I believe Duke33 might've been considering the Captcha system for sign ups and anonymous edits (a la HRWiki), which could help quite a bit (but obviously can't stop everything). -CapitalQtalk ♪ 18:36, 19 May 2006 (CDT)

Flansy Stays In The Picture

Remove mortgage from the list, Q. It occurs in that track's lyrics. It's a common word and there won't be any way to help if spammers use it. ~ Whirlwind

This blacklist actually only finds words in links, and it only checks for the word when a future edit is made containing the word (it doesn't go back to look at previous edits). The reason the Flansy page was seeked out is because I used the Spam bots tool, which searches for keywords that you enter. Foolishly, I typed just the word 'mortgage' instead of the full URL, because I thought it only checked pages edited in the past day or so. That doesn't explain why the bot went insane, though. It's deleting the Flansy page no matter what you type on it, within a second or two of the page being saved. >_> -CapitalQtalk ♪ 06:51, 20 Jun 2006 (MDT)
Oh. Then, I think it's the server move. It's always the server move. - Whirrrlwind (Woosh!) 06:54, 20 Jun 2006 (MDT)
I don't see how that would have anything to do with it...but Duke'll fix it when he gets on. In the meantime, I'll just post the lyrics here for reference: -CapitalQtalk ♪ 06:57, 20 Jun 2006 (MDT)
