Thankfully on a solo album, never has the devil sounded so unrock and roll in his life. If the Giants are the shitty beatles, this song is the equivalent of Lennon's luck of the Irish and McCartney's Mary had a little album. Terribly weak never has the lyrics "totally rocking" been anything but. Amazingly released as a single! (Mr Tuck)

The Newport In Question

Was there ever any confirmation that this song actually IS about Newport Beach in California? That seems like baseless speculation to me, without any sort of citation to back it up. Newport, RI has a reasonable amount of surfing spots and also seems like it'd fit in more with the New England-centric nature of the group that originally wrote the song.

I was just reading today's post in the blog you co-write, and came here to see this. :] Well - seeing as how I can find no information whatsoever about the original song (I even looked at that Geocities Mente site via archive.org), I'd say the trivia point should either be removed entirely (for speculation), or just changed to only mention Rhode Island. I actually just posted a query on Facebook asking if anybody knew anything about The Clamdiggers, not expecting a response, but a friend of mine who owns a record store provided a little more information since the members of the band were apparently later in some other band called Upper Crust. There's a little more information on them here. "They pretended to be a 1960s surf band, singing Beach Boys type songs about the crappy New England beaches, but it quickly descended into a celebration of heavy metal and satanism." Yeah, it's increasingly sounding like California has nothing to do with this song. (Also yaaaay, people read our blog!) - J-Gatz

I will concur that said record store owner is an extremely reliable source for facts about obscure music, and I have reason to believe he's personally met the members of The Upper Crust/Clamdiggers when they played a music festival he worked at in Cleveland.
