How's this? I think we need more pictures for more instruments. Thoughts?--Oldpinebox 15:23, 4 August 2012 (EDT)

for consideration, i've simplified this (perhaps too greatly) in sandbox2. it works almost the same way since most pages for instruments just redirect to the desired category. the main issue is images, and what would go in the place of an image if the wiki doesn't have one for the instrument entered. i haven't looked at the images we use now but if they're all standard [whatever]45.gif then that can easily be incorporated into the template, it's just that this might require a lot of switch statements because i don't know how standardised people's entries into the template are going to be (i.e. specifying a pitch—soprano recorder v. recorder—or using a short name—sax v. saxophone). also, where do we draw the line as to which instruments get images? we couldn't possibly cover every single instrument. -Apollo (colloquia!) 15:38, 4 August 2012 (EDT)
True, I was just think that there were a lot of other instruments in TMBG music that is not represented in the Babel boxes. And then there is this random 'oboe' box that has nothing to do with tmbg and isn't that popular of an instrument. I think people would benefit from having more control over this.
In regards to not having a picture, I replaced it with text. Is that good?
And as for alternate naming, I think that's where my version is better. You can list all the alternate names on there. But of coarse, that wouldn't be too hard to implement on your otherwise superior model, either.--Oldpinebox 16:09, 4 August 2012 (EDT)
generally i think text should stick to the 45-pixel limit, so maybe a three-letter substitute would be more appropriate. as far as non-standard instrument boxes go, the custom userbox template is really pretty easy to figure out, so i'm not sure how much freedom of choice actually needs to be included in a single template. using long switch templates seems unnecessary when one can just pick from a list or make their own box. so i think my final opinion on whether or not this should replace the instrument babel templates is just neutral. -Apollo (colloquia!) 16:16, 4 August 2012 (EDT)
Yeah, it's definitely not necessary. I guess we shouldn't move on with this unless we get another opinion.--Oldpinebox 17:11, 4 August 2012 (EDT)
And I didn't notice that the text part was a few pixels too big. Lowercase maybe?--Oldpinebox 17:13, 4 August 2012 (EDT)
