Preview of the show from the Exponent, Apr. 20, 1988:
THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS are a musical duo out of New York City with John Linnell on vocals, accordion, sax and John Flansburgh on vocals and guitar. Accompanied by a taped rhythm track of their own design, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS create an unusual and engaging performance. They will be appearing at AQUILON, 1575 Merwin Avenue in the Flats, on Wednesday, April 20th at 9 p.m.
Since the release of their self-titled album in November '86 the group has gained both popular and critical acclaim. Their first video appeared in regular rotation on MTV and the group has received favorable reviews in Spin, Rolling Stone, NME, the New York Times and People Magazine. In 1987, the group has toured much of the U.S. and Europe and currently plans a tour in Japan.
John Linnell and John Flansburgh met in grammar school in Lincoln, Massachusetts. After high school, Linnell played in a popular Rhode Island Rock Band, the Mundanes, while Flansburgh went on a world tour of institutions of higher learning. The pair found themselves reunited in New York City in 1981, coincidentally moving into the same railroad apartment building in Brooklyn. After stealing the band name from a ventriloquist friend's list of project titlers, THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS were off and rocking, rapidly becoming a staple on the downtown music scene.
The song "Don't Let's Start", a proven favorite from their debut LP is now available as a single and video. This 12" maxi-single features three previously unavaiable songs including "We're the Replacements", a the band's tribute to Paul Westerberg and Company.
