Trivia/Info

  • This song was created by San Diego-based musician Dan Hicks, who works under the name Pea Hix. It features John Flansburgh delivering a line as a radio DJ. Hicks had originally called the Dial-A-Song line and was surprised to find that Flansburgh was manually operating it. He then asked him to record the line for the song. Hicks wrote in the YouTube description:
As I was working on it, I had a "radio DJ" spoken word bit that I wanted to put in the middle, and took a break while I thought about how I wanted to do that part. I rang up They Might Be Giants' Dial-A-Song service (as I did several times per week in those days), and John Flansburgh's voice came on the line, giving an update about upcoming shows. [...] I was a bit stunned that he was actually personally manning the phone (normally you'd just get a recording) [...] Still a bit stunned, a light bulb suddenly when on above my head. I called back, explained that I was the guy who just called, and that I still couldn't make the show, but asked if he'd be willing to be the radio DJ voice on my song. He agreed, and I dictated the words to him, which he then read back as I rolled tape.
