The song's exotic chords, written out for you above, are a big hint-- don't be afraid to go up the neck for a few barre chords. The opening few chords of the verse sound best, I think, if you progress up the neck beginning with a first position E maj.

 +
Two notes on chord substitutions: *The Amaj9/C# seems to be what's played, but good ol' C#m works very well in its place; ** The F#maj7/A# was from a concert version I saw online, but the Mink Car version seems to be just an F#maj. Yeah, I've combined the two versions a bit. So sue me.

Hopeless Bleak Despair
By: They Might Be Giants
Key: E Major
Year: 2001
Tabbed By: JJRRutgers
  E B/D#
I never knew what everybody meant
  Aadd9/C# Bsus4
By endless, hopeless, bleak despair
  Cdim7 E/B
Until one day when I found out
  F#/A# B5
The first time I ever left my house
  G#/B# *(B#=C) C#m
It saw me and followed me home
      F#m Bsus4 B
And stayed with me for my whole life

    Aadd9 E/G# F#7sus4 E
For years and years I wandered the earth
  Aadd9 E/G# F#7sus4 E
Condemned to a life of bleak despair
G#5 A5 C#5 F#5 A
Then, one day, I looked around
E/G# Badd11 E
And found it had disappeared

            B E
Hopeless bleak despair
          B E
It was always there
   A E/G# Badd11/F# E
And then, one day, it disappeared
       B E
In a puff of smoke
     G#
In an unceremonious way
  A E/G# B/F# E
One day, it disappeared

All I had ever wanted in my life
Was only to be free of it
It drove away my family
It made me lose my job
Whenever anybody saw it
They'd say "get out of here"

For years and years I wandered the earth
Sick of my life, looking forward to death
Then, one day, I looked around
And found it had disappeared

Hopeless bleak despair
It was always there
And then, one day, it disappeared
In a puff of smoke
In an unceremonious way
One day, it disappeared

B7 A/C# B6/D# B7/D#
Hopeless bleak despair
E E9 G#+7
Hopeless bleak despair
C# C#9 F#add11 Eadd#11 B
Hopeless bleak despair

For years and years I wandered the earth
Until I died and went to hell
But my despair had ascended to heaven
That's how I finally got rid of it

Hopeless bleak despair
It was always there
And then, one day, it disappeared
In a puff of smoke
In an unceremonious way
One day, it disappeared

Hopeless bleak despair
It was always there
And then, one day, it disappeared
In a puff of smoke
In an unceremonious way
One day, it disappeared
