[edit] My contempt for post-modernism

As far as I understand, They Might Be Giants are not a reactionary band, so it almost burns my heart to call TMBG post-modern. It is true that post-modernism is "cool" but that is just about all it is, and post-modernists admit this freely. Post-modernist usually see themselves and the world in general "beyond" interpretation. For example, a post-modernists view on history is that studying it and trying to learn from it is a waste of time because there is no coherent objective point of view on history in which to learn from. Sure They Might Be Giants does have lyrics which they can not even put an exact meaning to, but they have never claimed that any of their songs don't have a meaning. The way I see it, TMBG seems to state that they can not claim rights on the meaning of their songs, and they seem to be fearful to give a straight serious answer because they would be afraid to force fans to accept this as TMBG canon. Post-modern music would either be entirely pointless, or very dull, most likely both. Because unlike other media, whether the artist likes it or not, a properly composed and coherent song will always have a story, even without lyrics.
