Talk:Up The Junction (Live BBC)

This has to be one of the best covers the band has ever done (certainly one of my top 10 picks). Flansburgh's slightly affected English accent is charming, and he sounds a lot like Glenn Tillbrook. Linnell's deep backing is very much in keeping with Chris Difford's voice in the Squeeze tradition (see songs like "Take Me I'm Yours" and "Slap and Tickle"). The music itself...well, the accordion work is phenomenal, the guitar is good, Marty's drumming is there but not overwhelming...and it all gels so seamlessly. new version

Is the version on the Four Covers from TMBG EP a new version with Linnell doing lead vocals and Flans on harmonies (or not there at all), or do my ears deceive me? ~ veggieman 01:26, 29 August 2012 (EDT)

As far as I can tell, the version on the EP is a new recording. It's a little cleaner, and you're right: Linnell is singing the lead vocals in this one. --Mosesofthecows 10:32, 29 August 2012 (EDT)

Shouldn't there be two pages now, since there are two versions, and the vinyl is not exclusive to IFC?

i'd like to wait till everyone can have the vinyl to actually do something like that. ifc people, you know what you're listening to, and the non-ifc people shouldn't have to be so tantalised, and so that they can be a part of things as well when they actually do happen. at least to some extent. for now, we still have all the information up so we're not missing any encyclopedic content. -Apollo (colloquia!) 18:30, 25 September 2012 (EDT)

True, and that makes perfect sense. One thing then: the "vocals by" JL with JF backing may be confusing, esp. with the information listed about it being performed live on BBC, as this is clearly not the case - there's conflicting information because both versions are being considered on the page - do you get me?

i get what you mean, but i think it's more akin to the note about mr. miller singing "Fingertips (Banjo)" at live shows, even though mr. stampfel is listed as the vocalist, since he sings it on the album, which is not too confusing. of course, at some point i agree that they should be separated. but for now this seems sufficient. of course, if you disagree, it is a wiki, and etc. etc. i have no authority over your decisions! -Apollo (colloquia!) 11:14, 26 September 2012 (EDT)

Squeeze (Tilbrook and Difford) was UK's TMBG

I have been listening to some old Squeeze records (esp Cool for Cats).

I think Tilbrook and Difford are pretty much UK's Flansburgh and Linnell. There's a lot of fun with synths and drum machines and wordplay and rhymes.

Essentially "Up The Junction" is Squeeze's "They'll Need a Crane", one of their more serious tracks, also kinda edging into Joe Jackson/Elvis Costello "Angry Young Man" model but just barely.

Many of the Squeeze tracks seem a little odd or twisted but in a "happy and twisted" way like a lot of things on the Pink Album.

Linnell does a great job with accordion, I think that Squeeze was kinda constrained by some sort of synth-pop model at the time with the original in a way that dates their music of the late 70's, more than it dates many TMBG tracks of 80's. I like the TMBG cover of Up the Junction better than the original.
