Talk:The Greatest

From This Might Be A Wiki

Not Great[edit]

This is pretty terrible. A plodding piano synth riff. Terrible lyrics. Flans singing at the top of his register. What were they thinking? (Mr Tuck)

I have to agree with you here. If this was left off the album I'm not sure anyone would miss it. The only thing I can figure is that maybe Flans was being ironic: i.e., this song is so ethereal it's not the greatest at anything. But knowing how much material the guys work on for these albums, it makes one wonder what was left on the "cutting room floor" in favor of this song... --MisterMe (talk) 22:48, 20 January 2018 (EST)
dunno why you guys find this terrible, its a really pretty minimal track with a cool b-side feel to it. Snagwhag (talk) 21:59, 1 February 2018 (EST)
Well, greatness can often be quantifiable. For example, scoring a ton of points in a sports game, or passing massive amounts of legislation to get an economy out of a depression. The greatness of this kind of song, though, is totally subjective, and I acknowledge it will have its fans. I stand by my original statement, but it has grown on me a little bit and it's certainly a change of pace from the rest of this very well-produced album. --MisterMe (talk) 08:07, 2 February 2018 (EST)

Dripping/percolating sound around 1:10 in?[edit]

Right around the "those cheers can be quiet" at 1:10 into the audio track, there's a dripping/percolating sound?

(And I thought it was "those cheaters can be quiet"!)

Yes, and it's beautiful and absolutely elevates the song to album-quality! Big ups to Pat or Marty or Linnell or Flans or whoever concocted that. -user:j2
That is an auditory treat, I agree! --MisterMe (talk) 21:04, 18 February 2018 (EST)
Today as I was listening to it, I kept turning up the volume and straining to hear because that part is so low in the mix. As I did so, I noticed at just that moment the lyrics were "... so I listen close. I listen close." 😆 --Nehushtan (talk) 12:50, 13 August 2020 (EDT)
Is that the quiet descending scale, or something else? --ColorOfInfinity (talk) 19:26, 13 August 2020 (EDT)
Yes, that scale --Nehushtan
Ok. For me it's a lot easier to here in the "I listen close" part because it's descended to a more audible pitch. --ColorOfInfinity (talk) 18:46, 14 August 2020 (EDT)

Killer song & video[edit]

I really like the song but wow! the video totally takes the leash off. Both of the actors nail it. The plot & pace are perfect, and I love the attention to detail in the props, lip syncing, and the blood & voodoo pricks.

The obvious reference for the obsessed fan is Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs. The curtains behind Offerman mimic the ones in Twin Peaks. --Nehushtan (talk) 00:27, 21 August 2019 (EDT)
