Talk:1986 Demo Tape

From This Might Be A Wiki
  • Though unproven, there is a possibility that this tape is fake, for a number of reasons:
    • "Everything Right Is Wrong Again" is simply the LP version, cropped after 'the song is over now.'
    • The single-exclusive drum intro of "Hotel Detective" is clearly grafted onto the LP version with a not-particularly-smooth edit.
    • "Chess Piece Face" is ridiculously slow, and seems to stutter as if time-stretched in modern-day audio software such as Audacity.
    • "Nightgown Of The Sullen Moon", which likely hadn't been recorded at this point, is merely the EP version sans intro and slowed down to the point of distorting Linnell's voice.

as the person who found and ripped this i am highly suspicious of it myself, and my personal conclusion is that it dates from the late 80s or perhaps early 90s and is the result of someone (johns? bill krauss? no idea) fiddling around. sadly i have not been able to draw any concrete conclusions about it. (i refer to it as the 1986 tape due to that being the date on it, rather than any necessary belief in that being when it was made).
also, the sporadic nature of the places and quality of the tracks lend some veracity to the idea of it being used for experimentation. --ant 22:16, 9 March 2013 (EST)

I don't even know that I'd call these unique versions of the songs, any more than I could create with a wee bit of time stretching and pitch shiftery. You can even hear at the end of Everything Right where someone seems to have spliced in part of the ending sustained chord at the last second to replace the bridge. --Swagar (talk) 18:33, 8 September 2013 (EDT)

I'm pretty sure that this is a fake.

  • "Everything Right Is Wrong Again's" pitch was raised but the speed is the same. Back in the old days, to change a song's pitch, you would have to change the tape speed. Also the ending was clearly from the end of the original song, because you can hear some notes from the synth that comes on at the last verse.
  • "Which Describes How You're Feeling" was ripped right from the 1985 demo tape.
  • "Don't Let's Start" was taken from the Frank O'Toole show.
  • "(She Was A) Hotel Detective", like the first guy said, is the album version with the intro from the single mix tacked onto the beginning.
  • "Chess Piece Face", again as the first guy pointed out, was clearly stretched digitally.
  • "Sally Boy Candy Bar" isn't even present in the download.
  • "Nightgown Of The Sullen Moon", once again as the first guy pointed out, is the EP version slowed down with the bridge cut out.

I have two theories:

  • Maybe the demo tape is actually a poorly made bootleg made by a fan or...
  • Maybe it really is a demo tape but it was recorded very poorly and/or it went bad overtime. Maybe the guy who sold Antgeth the tape used to work for Bar/None?

hey ant, someone's probably asked this before, but is there a reason Sally Boy Candy Bar wasn't included in the main rip? the mention of that appearing in the tape is, combined with the detail on the main article that the tape is of "a Maxell brand from a style first seen in 1992," brings up the question of exactly *when* this tape was made. considering Sally Boy Candy Bar wasn't officially released until it showed up on TMBG Unlimited July, it makes zero sense that this tape would be put together around or even after mid-2001 -- even if the other tracks seem very fake.
also could you put the 86tape page back up on your website? i have a flac rip that im guessing was downloaded from there ages ago, but it would be nice to access that information regarding this bizarreness again Snagwhag (talk) 04:07, 14 August 2019 (EDT)

TMBG 1926?[edit]

After the further discussion about the 1986 Demo Tape being illegitimate, I noticed something a little odd about the label (as seen in 86tape2.png - the fact it doesn't _actually_ say 1986 on it as far as I can tell!

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I probably totally wrong) - but through the goo stuck to the tape, I can see that where we've been assuming it says '8', it actually says '2' at half-height, matching the same hand script used for the twos in the lower '718-387-6962' label. The assumed '8' actually doesn't match the shape of either '8' script in the lower label - making me think it may never have said 8 in the first place. Can you confirm |Antgeth whether or not the goo that is currently on the tape was always there, and that you didn't write 92 in a heavier hand? --MooseBlaster (talk) 19:01, 25 May 2018 (EDT)

i am not at home right now but i can tell you that in person the pencil stands out from the gunk much better than it appears in the scan... and it is quite definitely an 8. the gunk probably came from it being stored loose in the box i found it in (probably in a basement or something). --ant 19:13, 25 May 2018 (EDT)
