Smarm[edit]

I think it was Jordan on his Don't Let's Start podcast (edit Sept 2020: it was actually Jordan's partner, Dave) who broached the idea that the Hiya Hi character here is the caricature glad-handing music industry executive or talent scout, like the narrator of Pink Floyd's Have A Cigar. Like that smarmy guy, this one knows that he comes across as insincere & hastens to assure the boys otherwise. On the other hand, he's willing to bring the band down a notch - "that thing's a clinker" - something that the suck-up fella courting the Floyd would never do. Mr. Big tells them to "try your best" to create something more marketable, but the Johns respond (regarding the dismissed clinker) "It's all that we've got" - rejecting the sell-out & dodging the big big whoredom. They're telling him there won't be a gravy train... a prediction that came true. --Nehushtan (talk) 00:15, 20 December 2019 (EST)
