If you're a big Guitar Tab or Bass Tab fan, check this out. I recently came across a wiki-compatible software that will let you enter the musical notes as hypertext, and it spits out a nice print-friendly .png of the music sheet. This software is called LilyPond, and it's documentation is here. (Click here for the tabs documentation.) If you'd like to experiment around with it, you can go to wikisophia.org's Sandbox.

The LilyPond software is a lot to install, so we are not going to guarantee that we can implement it, but I thought we would put it out there, to guage interest, amongst those who would really use it most.

The big question is, would this be useful to the wiki? Neither of us admins play the guitar, so we don't know if it would be valuable or not. Also, sure, it would print out beautiful sheet music, but would it be too difficult to enter? (Check out the Lilypond documentation before you answer...)

If there is enough interest, we will look into installing this software. Thanks --Duke33 19:55, 11 Feb 2005 (EST)

Sounds great! Using this software would regulate the tab's style, which is a bit of a mess right now. Also, in Talk: Main Page there is a brief discussion on accordion/piano/other instruments music. I think this would be perfect for that.-Augie 20:52, 11 Feb 2005 (EST)

Lilypond is cool[edit]

I don't play anything as cool as the guitar but I have used sites using lilypond to get sheet music and it is really user friendly. -dtg

I've only looked over the site briefly, but it sounds like a cool idea. I don't have a lot of technical musical experience but i'd be willing to give it shot. Count me in. No Mo 23:17, 11 Feb 2005 (EST)

Put me in the "In favor" column. Accordion solos and such would be sweet. -Tisher

Awesome! I've been itching to know how to play The Famous Polka for a while now, and I think I could contribute the piano part from South Carolina. Not to mention it will be possible to transcribe and upload Dead now! - Desck

I say go for it. I know I could contribute my interpretation of Man, It's So Loud In Here, and it'd be cool to have other songs transcribed. TMBG makes great songs for idly plucking on a violin, it's even greater when you've got music for the idle plucking. -Southwest

I'd need to see some examples of how it would work. Would it convert our original tabs into sheet music? I'm a guitar and piano player, and chords work great for both for me, so I'd like to just simplify and standardize the way we have our chord pages now. - JJRRutgers

It would be good for the majority of music that isn't played on guitar, but I would feel a little iffy about converting the guitar and bass tabs too, as I can read tabs easily, but notes take too long when using chords. - MooseBlaster

I believe that it can create tabs as well as sheet music.-Augie

Guitar Time[edit]

Post your guitar songs here!

here is one of mine. I can't sing though.... File:Llbnc.mp3

the famous poka File:Tfp.mp3

You found the perfect idea for a little section on here. This is my version of The Guitar. Sorry about my horrid attempt to sing. -Flipsticker

I agree, this section is awesome, and the submissions so far have been great! Here is my contribution; it's a slow rock acoustic version of I Hope That I Get Old Before I Die. It's not too impressive guitar-wise, but from a style standpoint it's fun because it's so different than the original. I apologize for my "singing" in advance... oldbeforeidie.mp3 -Brian

This is my rendition of Meet James Ensor. Check it out! -Flipsticker

Here's me playing The End of the Tour. 60 seconds long. The beginning SUCKS (I'm sorry I slaughtered this beautiful song T_T), but it gets a little better near the end. File:SpiralingShape Endofthetour.mp3 --Spiraling Shape 18:34, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

This is my Lucky Ball And Chain cover. I'm not too good a singer. here it is - Snapadoo

if the accordion..ists get linnell, y dont we get flans or miller over here to help us out?

they don't really get linnell. that was a joke. - pat.

that wasnt linnell? ...ok nevermind..

i don't think it is. i made the accordion page, and this j2 fellow seems to know too much to not be linnell. (J=John) (J2= John & john)

Printability[edit]

Do you think it would be cool to ahve a printer-compatible button or something?

There is a "Printable Version" link under the "toolbar" section on the left-hand side. Of course, that's not going to guarantee that it's totally printable..but at least the navigation (et al) is removed.

D Is For Drums[edit]

Why is there not a page for it?

Scoring / Lilypond[edit]

I'd like to revive this discussion. It looks like a new MediaWiki Score Extension has been released. I don't play guitar, so I don't know if this would be a good way to display tabs or not. To you experienced guitar players out there, what do you think? --Duke33 13:09, 24 April 2013 (EDT)

Randomizer[edit]

Hi there. I have a suggestion for this page but don't know enough about wiki to build it. Could there be a link on the main page (and on all tab pages) to leap to a random tab? One of the fun parts of playing TMBG music is that there's so much to pick from, but choosing is the hardest part! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.187.189.129 (talkcontribs) 15:13, 10 December 2016

I think you're looking for Special:Random/Guitar Tab! I'm not sure if it's necessary to put it everywhere, but it is a nice little shortcut instead of doing roulette on the category page. —146.244.134.243 18:56, 14 December 2016 (EST)
